A bathroom vanity is a small surface that has to hold daily essentials and still look good. Most fail because everything lives on top of it.
The fix is a simple rule about what earns a place on the counter, plus a tray.
The rule: three things on display
Only three categories belong on a vanity surface:
- Something functional and attractive — a soap dispenser, a toothbrush holder
- Something living or natural — a plant, dried stems, a stone dish
- Something soft — a folded hand towel
Everything else goes in a drawer or a cabinet. Toothpaste, razors, skincare, hairbrushes — none of it earns counter space.
Use a tray
The single most effective vanity move. A tray groups the things that must stay out into one object.
Sizing: roughly one-third the vanity width for a single sink, or one tray per sink on a double.
Materials that survive a bathroom: marble, ceramic, metal, sealed wood, rattan. Avoid unsealed wood and anything with a fabric base.
Put on it: soap dispenser, a small plant, a candle. That’s it.
The tray also means you can lift everything off in one movement to clean.
Decant what you display
A branded plastic bottle looks like a product. The same soap in a ceramic or glass pump looks like decor.
- Hand soap and lotion in matching pumps
- Cotton buds and pads in small glass jars
- Bath salts in a jar with a wooden scoop
- Toothbrushes in a ceramic cup, not the plastic one they came with
This is the change that makes a vanity look styled rather than just tidy, and it costs very little.
Mirror sizing
Width: the mirror should be roughly the same width as the vanity, or slightly narrower — never wider.
Height: centre it at about 60–65 inches from the floor, or centred on the vanity itself.
Clearance: leave 4–8 inches between the top of the backsplash and the bottom of the mirror.
Shape: an arched or round mirror softens a boxy bathroom. A large rectangular mirror makes a narrow room feel wider.
Lighting
Bathroom lighting is usually the worst in the house — one overhead fitting casting shadows straight down onto your face.
Best setup: two sconces either side of the mirror at 60–66 inches, which lights your face evenly rather than from above.
If you only have overhead: add a small lamp on the vanity if there’s a socket, or a battery-operated one.
Bulb temperature: 2700–3000K. Warm enough to be flattering, bright enough to see properly.
What to add for warmth
Bathrooms are all hard surfaces — tile, ceramic, glass, mirror. Softness is what makes them feel finished.
- A folded or rolled hand towel in a colour that isn’t white
- A small rug or bath mat with texture
- A woven basket on the floor or a shelf
- A wooden or stone dish
- A plant — pothos, fern or eucalyptus. Humidity suits them.
Plants that thrive in a bathroom
The humidity that ruins other things is perfect for these:
- Pothos — trailing, tolerates low light
- Boston fern — loves steam
- Spider plant
- Air plants in a small dish
- Eucalyptus stems hung from the shower head (not a plant exactly, but it smells wonderful and lasts weeks)
Seasonal touches
A vanity can be refreshed in three minutes:
Spring — a small vase of tulips, a light-coloured towel Summer — greenery in a clear jar, a citrus-scented candle Autumn — dried stems, an amber glass dish, a deeper towel Winter — eucalyptus, a brass tray, a warm-scented candle
Keep the tray and the soap dispenser. Change the towel and one small item.
Under the vanity
Everything you took off the counter has to go somewhere.
- Stacking drawers rather than one shelf
- A U-shaped organiser around the pipe
- Clear containers, one per category
- A tension rod with spray bottles hanging
- Adhesive hooks inside the door
Common mistakes
- Too many products on display
- Branded packaging left visible
- A mirror wider than the vanity
- Overhead-only lighting
- Nothing soft or living in the room
- A tray that’s too small to group anything
Double vanity
Treat each side as its own zone. One tray each, mirrored arrangement, and a shared item in the centre — a plant, a tray of towels, or a candle.
Symmetry works particularly well on a double vanity. Two matching sconces, two matching mirrors, two matching trays.
The formula:
Tray + decanted soap pump + small plant + one folded towel in colour + warm sconce lighting.
Five elements, everything else in a drawer, and the vanity looks finished in about ten minutes.
